Sussex by the Tye
Please join us for our Midsummer Evening. In Alfriston’s first year within the new National Park we thought we would mark this historic event by enjoying an evening on the Tye to celebrate one of the most beautiful villages in Sussex… At 6pm, when the visitors have gone, meet us at the Clergy House, the first ever National Trust property, to enjoy a glass of something cool in the garden and meet their new gardener, Jo Hooper. Then take a gentle saunter across the Tye to St. Andrew’s – the Cathedral of the Downs – to meet the industrious Church Recorders working inside and find out what treasures they have discovered.
By 7.30 it must be supper time! And so we repair to the Village Hall for a delicious buffet supper. Then, just as pudding (it’s Sussex and very wicked!) is finished, we will be joined by the famous Copper Family who will entertain us with some traditional Sussex folksongs.
Tickets: £14 each to include a welcoming drink at the Clergy House, entertainment and
buffet supper. Cash bar also available.Advance booking required. There will be one lucky
prize-winning ticket holder.Tickets from May 24 at Steamer Trading,Alfriston (01323

Aren’t You Glad You’re not Royal!
Last year when June Goodfield’s book on Stanmer and the Pelham family was published, she discovered another intriguing story about the house and the Pelhams. It was a tale she could not resist, and this evening the principal players share the story with you.
JUNE GOODFIELD (author)
introduces the ‘Perplexing Pelham Puzzle’. JOAN SIMMS (neé Pelham) sets the
scene. Chief storyteller MATHEW HOMEWOOD (genealogist and historical researcher)
unravels the mystery as the tale progresses from aristocrat to master cooper and
from stately home to public house. KEVIN GORDON rounds off the story with a
brief but colourful description of Lewes in the 19th Century and the Britannia
Inn that once stood in the red-light district of Keere
street.
