Alfriston & District Royal British Legion - Minutes of the branch meeting held at the 'Star Inn' on Monday 6th April, 2009 - Newsletter No 50

Ron Levett said that the state of the membership remained at 69

The minutes of the meeting held on 9th January were approved

Chris Goodchild stated that 54 members including wives had attended the February luncheon held at 'Tudor House' the meal provided by Roger & Louise had been much appreciated.

We had now been welcomed back to the 'Star Inn' by Damian and Martin for our quarterly meetings in the 'Heritage Room' they will provide the Remembrance Day Sunday Lunch - November 8th

The nominees for the Festival of Remembrance at the Albert Hall on Saturday 7th November  2009 are Dr Gerald Munro and Russell Simpson

John Burton reported that the main theme at County Conference was the fall off in membership numbers. This can only be corrected if new members are attracted whether they have served in the armed forces or not. Also personnel leaving the forces should be given a years free membership of the Legion when discharged. There were no welfare matters to

Treasurers Report from Flyle Hussain said that we had recently sent £616 to the Poppy Appeal from subscriptions and donations. Our bank balance was currently £790.58 and would soon be reduced to £470.58 when a further amount of £320 was sent to the Appeal. This last amount had arisen from autographs from Chris Morley our Concorde Pilot who had signed 160 first day covers. Thank you Chris!

Malcolm Mazey said that the County Bowls competition was now closed but our team composed of Malcom, Flyle Hussain, David Bold and John Burton will compete in other matches. Any others interested contact Malcom

There will be a veterans day celebration in Seaford on 27th June starting at 11.30a.m on the Martello Fields. The Silver band will be playing - all welcome. Events throughout the day.

Veronica Cowin asked whether there were any other women members of the branch as she appeared to be the only one attending meetings to which the answer was yes, but they preferred to be social members
